Today,
7th November is being celebrated as the 125th birthday of
the renowned Physicist Sir C.V. Raman.
Sir C.V. Raman was born on 7th November 1888 in Trichinopoly, Madras Province and is well known to have made significant contributions to the progress of science and technology.
Sir C.V. Raman was born on 7th November 1888 in Trichinopoly, Madras Province and is well known to have made significant contributions to the progress of science and technology.
His
inclination towards science and specifically physics, developed from the early
years of his life and following his passion for physics he completed his B.A.
degree in 1904 securing the first place, his M.A. in 1907 with distinction and
was also awarded a gold medal in Physics in 1904. In 1907, he joined the Indian Financial
Service as an assistant auditor general for the Government of India and also
researched at IACS.
Sir Raman established Raman Research Institute in the year 1948 on his own
capabilities and did not accept any funds from the government. In the initial
year RRI had no electricity, but this shortcoming never discouraged him and he
continued to conduct several optical experiments with sunlight as the best
source. Sir. Raman clearly showed that Science was like a religion to him.
He is known for his excellent work on the scattering of life and his
outstanding discovery, which is named as the Raman Effect. For this discovery,
he was awarded with the Nobel Prize in science in the year 1930, making him the
first Asian and first non-white to receive this prestigious award.
Sadly, Sir. Raman died on 21st November 1970 in Bangalore. To
pay a tribute to this great personality, every year we observe the National
Science Day on February 28, just to commemorate his discovery of the Raman
Effect.
