Young India Fellowship Programme for Postgraduate Students in India, 2014/15



Applications are invited for the Young India Fellowship programme for 2014/15 academic year. Young India Fellowship is a one year postgraduate residential programme. The Fellows come from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and contribute to the cross-flow of ideas and inspired learning which adds to liberal education that the Fellowship offers. Fellows will receive a full or partial scholarship to cover the entire fee, boarding and lodging when they enter this prestigious fully-residential, full-time programme. Applicants will be doing internship in a project based on their liking and background.

Study Subject (s): Scholarships are being offered in multi-disciplinary programme focused on the Liberal Arts and run in association with the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Fellows take classes in a range of subject areas that cover anthropology to ethics, life sciences to climate change, art appreciation to entrepreneurship.
Course Level: Young India Fellowship is a one year residential programme.

Eligibility: YIF programme is open to all Indian citizens with:
-Applicants who are 28 years of age or less on 31st May, 2014
-A recognised undergraduate or postgraduate degree
-No more than three years of work experience
The Fellowship promotes diversity and applicants from all areas of specialisation are encouraged to apply. While applicants who have been educated in a vernacular language as their medium of instruction are welcome, it is expected that they will be able to converse, read and write in English.
-Applicants holding PIO/OCI cards are also welcome to apply.

Scholarship Description: The Young India Fellowship Programme (YIFP) is a unique holistic, multi-disciplinary programme focused on the Liberal Arts and run in association with the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). This one-year residential post-graduate programme brings together a group of bright young men and women from around India with the aim of creating India’s next batch of socially conscious leaders. Fellows take classes in a range of subject areas that cover anthropology to ethics, life sciences to climate change, art appreciation to entrepreneurship. They are mentored by amongst the best corporate, civil society and academic leaders in the country. YIFP is delivered completely free of charge to students and is supported by a network of well-known corporate leaders, social activists, researchers and entrepreneurs. The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is YIFP’s academic partner and has helped design curriculum and provide faculty. The Young India Fellowship Programme is the precursor to Ashoka University, India’s first specialist Liberal Arts university, which is under development at Rajiv Gandhi Education City in Sonepat, Haryana.

Duration of award(s): Fellowships are awarded for one-year.

What does it cover? The Young India Fellowship offers scholarships that cover, in full or in part:
-Tuition expenses for lectures and workshops delivered by the very best teachers and experts from around the world
-Board and lodging expenses
-Cost of reading and course materials, library subscriptions and purchase of text books
Applicants will be doing an internship in a project based on their liking and background. YIF has conceived the Experiential Learning Module, or ELM, to complement the academic work with real work experience. The ELM work is supported by a team of coaches who provide essential guidance on structuring business problems, analysis and presentations. Fellows will undertake eight month-long engagement with an organisation after completing the first two terms of the programme.

Selection Criteria: The selection of the candidate for the programme will be made considering a combination of many factors. The process will include evaluation of the submitted application, telephone interview, personal interview and a general ability test to assess their verbal, written and analytical skills. A Young India Fellow could be someone who has:
-A deep-rooted ambition to solve problems and make an impact on society
-Passion for an idea or an issue which could have wider social/business/academic implications
-The humility to believe that he/she needs to learn more
-The willingness to think differently and chart a new course
-A demonstrated ability to overcome challenges
-Qualities of integrity, self-awareness, energy, initiative and open-mindedness
-An above-average academic record
Final selection will be based on the applicant’s successful performance at all of these stages.

Notifications: Application round 1: Final offers to 1st-round applicants will be in 1st Feb-15th Feb 2014 and Final offers to wait-listed applicants will be in 5th May-10th May 2014. Application round 2: Final offers to applicants interviewed for 2nd round will be in 15th Apr-30th Apr 2014.

How to Apply: Applicants can choose one of the following two ways to apply:
-Apply online by registering himself/herself on the YIF website. For online application submission, applicants need to pay Rs 1000/- by clicking on the application payment link given in the application form . On successful payment, a system generated e-mail will be sent to the registered email id of the applicant. OR
-Download the application form from the YIF website. For application sent in hard copy, applicants must send a Demand Draft for Rs 1000/- made in favour of International Foundation for Research and Education (IFRE) payable at Delhi. A confirmation email will be sent to the registered email id of the applicant after receipt of DD and application.

Please note: YIF offers application fee waiver to eligible applicants. Please check the application form for eligibility criteria.

Note: If you have applied in Round 1 then you cannot apply again in Round 2.

Scholarship Application Deadline: YIF offers a rolling admission process and is split into two rounds. Each round accepts applications within a specified date- window and selects Fellows from the pool of applications from that round. Application round 1: 5th Sept 2013 to 15th Dec 2013 and Application round 2: 16th Dec 2013 to 28th Feb 2014.
