PhD fellowship in Genomic Engineering of Human Stem Cells at University of Copenhagen

PhD fellowship in Genomic Engineering of Human Stem Cells at University of Copenhagen
  • Stem Cells and Embryology Group :Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from humans and pigs are used to e.g. establish better therapies for neuro-degenerative diseases and other neurological diseases by the establishment of patient-specific in-vitro nerve cell models and genetically modified animal models. The group has an open 3-year PhD position in iPSCs comencing on 1 December 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.
  • Project description : Genetic correction and characterization of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) derived from patients suffering from Alzheimer´s disease or Frontotemporal dementia (FTP): proof of concept for potential cell therapy and discovery of novel mechanisms underlying the disease. The project will include correction of an in-vitro human disease model using TALEN nucleases. The cell lines will be characterized for pathology associated with the disease. In-vitro investigation of the roles of glycoproteins and other related studies relating to glycosylation will be conducted. Genetic correction and transplantation of stem cells into a mouse model of either Alzheimer´s disease or frontotemporal dementia will be performed.
  • Qualifications : We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified Master student that has a tertiary degree from a Science, Biotechnology, Genetics or Medicine discipline. We are seeking a person that has excelled in university grades and produced a Master´s thesis on a relevant topic to the project description. First author publications are deemed favorable
  • Required : Experience in most of the following:
    • culture of pluripotent mammalian stem cells
    • gene modification techniques
    • molecular cloning/plasmid design
    • TALEN/ZFN technology
    • handling of rodents
    • background in neurobiology
    Desirable : Experience in :
    • culture of human induced pluripotent stem cells
    • experience in stem cell differentiation into neurons
    • experience in analysis of TAU pathology
    • knowledge on neurodegenerative diseases (focus on Frontotemporal dementia and alzheimer´s
    • glycobiology
